Super Best Friends Club // Yes You Are / Evolution // Out Now // Tentacle Entertainments
May 9, 2012 – 8:40 pm | No Comment

While listening to this new, typically idiosyncratic single by cosmic eccentrics Super Best Friends Club, I found myself split down the centre, psychologically speaking, until the two predominant aspects of my personality were standing in the middle of the room, facing one another down and shouting. Well. One of them was shouting.

Never Enough Notes is the brainchild of Kimberley-Marie Sklinar. Kim’s favourite bands are We Have Band, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Wild Beasts, Death Cab For Cutie, Interpol, Phoenix, The Police and Radiohead…and that’s a shortlist. She’s an alright writer and a terrible guitarist…and an even worse snowboarder. Kim is from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, but has settled in London over the past few years. Having written for numerous publications and websites including The Smoke, allgigs.co.uk, The 405 and The Beat Surrender, Never Enough Notes was created almost as a dare in 2009 yet grows every day. Kim’s best gig – Radiohead @ Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. Worst gig – Peter Green’s set at The Secret Garden Party festival (the festival itself blew her mind!). Kim is not very good at writing about herself in the third person. She greets animals in the street. Kim deals with the overall running of Never Enough Notes.

Jersey Budd // Live & Interview // Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth // 24.09.09

When my best pal told me she’d bought stocks in a young musician with the same surname I thought, “ahhh that’s nice, very supportive, probably crap”. I didn’t expect 1 year later to be invited to said musicians gig and find this cocky frontman with down-to-earth friendliness and a stage presence that was a little too big for Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms…

Produced partly in the Mohave desert in California by Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and partly in New York by James Ford (Klaxons ‘Myths of The Near Future’) the band have come a long way from Sheffield, a fact reinforced by the mature style of music displayed throughout ‘Humbug’…

The Sunshine Underground // Interview and Art Competition

The Sunshine Underground are some of our favourite honorary Northerners, if they were a cake we’d probably let them use a less-savoury Yorkshire Pudding. Due to launch an EP in November, the lads are keen to continue interacting with their fans and use their art on the cover sleeve.

We spoke to Daley from the band about naked men, their art competition, and McDonalds birthday cake…

Lofty Heights // Eye Contact // 05.10.09 // Unit Rad Records

MySpace: Lofty Heights Californian beach music hits London warehouse – Lofty Heights’ debut single ‘Eye Contact’ is a multilayered cacophony of orchestration with the instantly likeable, heartfelt vocals of Greg Griffin, a West Coast transplant to these shores. Extradition Order // Since The Bomb Dropped // 03.09.09 // I Blame The Parents Records

MySpace: Extradition Order As a folk singer’s daughter who was brought up with fisherman-jumper-clad beardy singers around her breakfast table plucking banjos, when I was asked to review the anti-folk movements Extradition Order’s 1st album ‘Since The Bomb Dropped’ I giggled somewhat whilst humming fidley-ridley-roll. The anti-folk movement itself was born in Greenwich Village, New [...]

The Gay Blades // Hey She Say // 28.09.09 // Something In Construction

“Hilarious” and “Ridiculous” are two words that spring to mind when summing up sounds, antics and general tomfoolery of The Gay Blades. They possess tunes entitled ‘Bob Dylan’s 115th Nightmare’ and ‘Why Can’t I Grow A Beard’, they refer to themselves as The Aristocrat of Crime and The Snitch, and there is often a break [...]
