Soko // I Thought I Was An Alien // 20.02.12 // Because Music

This charming, woozy little daydream of a song, the title track from French singer Soko’s debut album, is the musical equivalent of a tiny patch of blue sky on a cold, grey day. Haunted by birdsong and ethereal slide guitar, its combination of clever production and deceptively simple songwriting enable it to be both lush and lo-fi at the same time, which shouldn’t really work but does. Soko’s quirky croon and odd lyrics – ‘You look at me as if I was a freak, but you said you like freaky people, so I thought you might like me a little bit’ – suggest a duet between Coco Rosie and an extremely stoned Bat For Lashes, and the accompanying video has a made-in-the-back-garden feel that captures the song’s sleepy mood perfectly.

Short and sweet – in an entirely innocent, non-cloying sense – if it’s not on the soundtrack to a kooky indie romance yet, it had better be by the end of the year.
