Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin // Tape Club // Out Now // Polyvinyl

With the undisputed best name in musical history, SSLYBY are back with a new release of a 10 year career-spanning album. Whether you’ve heard of them before now or not (you’d probably remember if you had) this is the album for you. It’s a great introduction to a great band and means that after one listen you’ll be able to trick your friends into thinking you’ve been championing the Missouri band from the very start.

There are a few different variations of the story concerning the origins of the name, stretching from Will’s brother wrote a history paper entitled, ‘Someone still loves you Boris Yeltsin’ to them just thinking it would be a great idea to have a really long band name, so they did just that. Who knows? Whatever you deem to be the truth, you better believe that this 26 song album is their ultimate achievement.

With catchy indie pop you can dance along to, these songs will force their way into your head and lodge themselves in there for good. I imagine this is what Mumford and Sons would sound like if they had a love child with Kasabian. My absolute favourite track from the album is the previously unreleased Chilli Cook-Off. You can’t help but throw off all inhibitions and twist around your room to the infectious chorus.

As the album leads you through the band’s musical journey, you realise that they really found their style towards their last album, and despite coming into their own as a band it does tend to leave you wanting more variation. Having said that, a few similar songs are better than one terrible one; so I’m pretty happy.

Another reason to be happy is that the album is currently available to listen to online for free at http://sslyby.bandcamp.com, how generous. I definitely recommend a listen.

7/10
