Puro Instinct // Slivers of You // 26.09.11 // Record Makers
Sometimes there’s nothing better than the feeling of discovering a new band and finding that you quite like them. Puro Instinct, formerly Pearl Harbor, is made up of the Kaplan sisters, Piper (vocals) and Skylar (guitar). They’re a young duo; Piper is 24 and Skylar is just 16.
On ‘Slivers of You’ Skylar’s gorgeous, clear guitar line works beautifully against Piper’s murky vocals. The cover of their latest album, Headbangers in Ecstasy, conjures up that all too familiar 80s nostalgia, but its haze and soft glow happily contradicts the sound of this single. ‘Slivers of You’ is just under three minutes’ worth of discordant guitars and vocals, taking you back to somewhere you can’t quite remember visiting.
On the whole, ‘Slivers of You’ is very pretty (and so is Puro Instinct), but this song does run the risk of sounding apathetic. It moves along in a world of its own, for the most part unchallenging and unchanging until the last moment, when it comes to an abrupt end. Having said that, Skylar’s guitar injects the song with a little bite in the middle 8, and the chorus, “slivers of you coming through / picture becomes more complete” is sure to get stuck in your head for a day or two.
Puro Instinct have a date scheduled for the Trof Fallowfield in Manchester on 4th December. Tickets are available here.
