Guillemots // I Don’t Feel Amazing Now // 23.10.11
Anyone who knows me knows that my love of the Guillemots has spanned for many years and is still very much alive. This made writing this review quite tricky because whilst I love the band and have done so for many years, I’m not too fond of this song. I think it’s a little dull and conventional and not quite what I’d expect from the band who released Sao Paolo. I actually much prefer the acoustic version of this that was played for Watch Listen Tell which involves Fyfe’s voice, a guitar, some sticks picked up in the nearby woods and a disused railway tunnel gate. This stripped down version is far better than the studio recording because it’s so simple. It makes me think they should have recorded an acoustic version for the album. The actual song isn’t much different to your typical pop ballad in terms of style and subject matter. The main difference is the lyrics. In true Guillemots style it is a beautifully worded song with a sentiment that tugs at your heartstrings which could only be because of the lyrics. Overall it is a lovely song and would be great coming from any other band but frankly I’ve always thought the Guillemots were a little more daring and interesting than this. Personally I’d like a return to Through The Windowpane please…
I Don’t Feel Amazing Now is released on the 23rd October and you can watch the Watch Listen Tell session here
