Emmy’s Unicorn // Tokyo EP // Out Now // Unsigned

Upon hearing the intro to “Tokyo”, you would think that eighties electro heroes Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox had reformed under this surreal guise. However you are listening to the latest offering from self-bracketed ‘dark electropop / big strings’ duo Emmy’s Unicorn. The band, a chance creation of singer Emmy-Lou Kay and Welsh producer Mr Ronz, have been around less than a year, yet within that period have clocked up airtime on kudos-heavy BBC6music and a BBC Session, complete with string quartet, available for your senses on YouTube.

The title song, a looped crescendo driven by a simple key part and layered with Emmy’s soft, melancholy vocals, is certainly a promising debut, so much so that I found myself humming it on my cold walk to work, the winter sky complimenting the song’s sombre, dark vibe, my humming complimenting the shit I stood in.
Although the song never quite ascends to the peak it is capable of, choosing to hover at a safer base camp, this duo show great promise in a time of such great uncertainty… Steps reunion tour anyone?
