The Coathangers // Larceny & Old Lace // Out Now // Suicide Squeeze

Basing your name on an abortion joke probably isn’t the best move in the world, but if you like Los Campesinos with added Robots In Disguise then this is a band for you.

Larceny & Old Lace is the third album by this all-girl quintet from Atlanta, however you’ll be pleased to know that despite being around since 2007 they still don’t sound like the can really play their instruments, and have kept to their punk roots. By all means this doesn’t mean they haven’t matured but in the words of Gary Barlow (skip to 4.40) they have matured ‘nicely’, with songs showing stronger songwriting and the album as a whole having a broader range of influences. For example ‘Go Away’ has a very melodic sound to it, reminding me of Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but then ‘Well Alright’ is more like early Kings of Leon with its squawky vocals and blues-rock riff.

I guess this album is essentially like  a ball pool full of  kids. Fun, energetic and raucous but in a controlled environment so that no tears are shed and everyone gets to have a good time.
