Mazes // Summer Hits // 20.06.11 // Fat Cat Records
Mazes recently released their debut album ‘A Thousand Heys’, released on Brighton based Fat Cat Records. Mazes themselves are a four piece indie band based in Manchester. Before releasing their debut record the band released many an EP, single and mixtape on numerous labels, quickly building up a back catalogue and fan base before joining the Fat Cat team.
The lead track of the bands latest single is ‘Summer Hits’, the second to be taken from the new record. As you can imagine from the track title it’s a feel good, summer song. It’s a fast, foot tapping, indie pop song all about the perfect summer, and is a definite contender for my summer anthem this year. Similarities could, and have, been drawn between Mazes and Yuck’s recent self titled release. As Michael Hann from the Guardian said in his recent review of A Thousand Heys “you wait years for a British four-piece in thrall to early-90s US alt-rock, and then two come along at once.”
The B-side is a track called Bethesda, this was recorded at the same time as the album but didnt make it onto the final track listing so the first time we hear it is here. The band sight their influences as artists such as REM, Guided By Voices and Flying Nun, you can certainly here these influences in the single and the B-Side in particular, sending you back to the early 90′s and the alt rock scene that was breaking through at this time. Is it time for this scene to have a revival? If it means more music like this then I for one hope so.
Summer Hits is released on June 20th, available for pre order from the Fat Cat Records and Mazes site now.
