Sunbirds // River Run EP // 19.07.10 // Smoky Carrot Records

While Sunbirds hail from three very different corners of the world – Los Angeles, Paris and London – their sound is distinctly British. Taking influence from gleeful 60s Americana and mixing in dark shades of shoegaze produces a band that sounds like Ian Curtis fronting The Beach Boys.

The title track is all jangly 60s guitars and a driving basslines, wrapped up nicely with the sound of someone knocking two coconuts together to sound like a horse galloping (a la Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Throw in clever lyrics and soft vocal harmonies that clash with rock riffs, and you’ve got the makings of something special.

The other two songs on the EP, We Won’t Sleep Tonight and Roses Are Blue don’t disappoint either – both bass-driven numbers with swirling, acid-trip guitars and synths. Any of the three tracks on this EP could stand on its own as a single, and each one showcases a slightly different strength.

Sunbirds have created a trio of moody summer anthems, packed with catchy choruses and a rock n’ roll vibe that should get you instantly hooked. It’s a really promising introduction for a band that will go far. If they can self-produce an EP this good, I look forward to the debut album.

9/10
