What: Pianist – Nils Frahm
Born in Hamburg 1982, Nils Frahm’s interest in music began in his childhood. Following lessons under the hand of the well respected Nauhm Brodski and having recordings released on German indie Atelier Musik, Frahm went on to found a studio in Berlin for composing/producing.
Early sessions there in 2008 led to both ‘Wintermusik’ – a collection of three piano pieces intended as Christmas gifts for friends (later released by UK label Erased Tapes) and a relationship with American musician and label mate Peter Broderick. After the two became friends, Broderick set about recording a two day session of Frahm’s piano improvisations in a rented church in Berlin. The resulting record entitled ‘The Bells’ was released earlier this year on Erased Tapes (UK) receiving praise from The BBC, Uncut and Mojo amongst others.
