SXSW Field Blog // Day 2 // Weds 17th March 2010

WOO! It’s started. Austin is a mess of traffic, roadblocks and keen musos…

After a ‘hearty’ breakfast of pancakes and syrup (or some tortilla mexican skillet breakfasty eggy and pepper thing if you’re my boyfriend), we headed downtown to check out the sunshine and the scene…

First up was Latitude 30 on San Jacinto and 6th for Belfast Rocks – an Irish band showcase that just happened to be on St. Patrick’s Day. Free food, free beer – we were there! Four of NI’s best bands were set to be opening SXSW this year at the Belfast Rocks party.

Strait Laces opened the show with their epic screeching and boyish vocals. Clearly having the time of their lives and playing a total of nine shows this week, the lads proper went for it, including some new tracks into their set. Where The Wolf Roam – as featured on Never Enough’s Southwest of Never compilation was belted out to a packed room at about 1pm.

And So I Watch You From Afar were up next. A blistering, deafening yet almost hypnotic wall of instrumental guitar, most definitely influenced by The Cure. Wow. General Fiasco were third to grace the Belfast Rocks stage – clearly having brought a following with them (or was that for the free bar and Irish nibbles?)

Never Enough decided to exit via backstage as it was time for some munchies, not before stopping by one of the many bands just rocking out on the streets of Austin. When in Rome…

Post-munchies became Never Enough Illness. But we’re okay! Back today on it with band interviews, and muchas partying…hasta luego!
