The Standards // Out Of The Fire // 08.02.10 // Schnapps House

MySpace: The Standards

Hartlepool trio (based in London), The Standards, are Neil, Mark and Scott, are bursting with simple, youthful indie energy that seems to make certain songs work.

Out Of The Fire is a summer rifftastic singalong to wash that rubbish February weather right away. Take that, Met Office.

Promising, with a cheeky swagger of confidence. Boyish vocals, merry chords and general niceness are all over this track. Give it time and by summer, its twitchy riffs and hint of yesteryear could the makings of a future anthem.

Out Of The Fire is a refreshing poppy release, particularly when wading through the inescapable deep and gloomy waters of anti-folk and electro that’s upon us this winter. Key line,”don’t mystify or vilify me”, is begging to get stuck in your head.

You can catch The Standards on 6th February at Camden’s Barfly, and 22nd March at 93 Feet East (free gig). They’re definitely on our radar. Not a vocoder in sight.

8/10
