Patrick Wolf // Damaris // Bloody Chamber Music // 14.12.09

Mr Wolf is never one to shy away from the odd overly-dramatic number, and the signs are that he’s not likely to change. But it’s important not to be too critical about such a style, especially when it’s done right; as a nice example, this song is considerably more appealing than some of his earlier singles.

Damaris has an intensity that is not exactly the most gripping you’ll ever experience, but the string arrangement is hardly terrible, and, despite getting a little too theatrical and tiresome towards the end, the vocals are quite effective. There’s a lot less of an electronic influence present here, making way for Patrick’s more gentle, and often much more graceful side, showing that maybe he has a genuine ability to craft songs that aren’t lingering hesitantly around the middle of the 80’s charts.

It’s one to please his fans I’m sure, but it’s also pleasant enough to maybe make the neutrals take a little more notice.

6/10
