Mumford & Sons // The Cave // 01.03.10 // Gentlemen of the Road/Island Records

Mumford and Sons’ latest single ‘The Cave’ is the third to be taken from their debut LP ‘Sigh No More’, and is possibly the best so far. The London-based folk rock band actually formed 3 years ago and have supported people such as Noah and The Whale, Laura Marling and the Maccabees. They are now slowly beginning to rise in fame, as their numerous awards and (almost) sold-out tour would suggest.

‘The Cave’ is great. It starts off very folky with an uptempo guitar riff, that is then accompanied by soft piano. Then it suddenly tricks you and turns all indie! Then it goes back to the folkyness and so on. It is a contradiction of a song and I love it. Marcus Mumford’s voice is nice and reminds of a raspy version of The Pretenders! The lyrics are cool, particularly the line: “But I will hold on hope and I won’t let you choke, on the noose around your neck. And I’ll find strength in pain, and I will change my ways.”

I also really like the harmonies and the instrumentation – my favourite thing being the random mandolin. These boys can clearly play their instruments, and they seem to be very versatile with what they can do. Near the end the song turns almost Christmassy with bells chiming and ‘aah’s, which could possibly be considered cheesy: but I like it!

Overall, the song is great. Anyone into Bon Iver and/or Alessi’s Ark will love these guys. Their tour begins in March – go go go!

7/10
