Miike Snow @ The Scala, London (2/2/10)

Miike Snow, the latest musical offering from Scandinavia, tonight perform an indie electro filled set as part of this year’s NME Awards Tour. After one album and moderate success in their homeland this Swedish collective are taking a chance on making further progress in the UK. Tonight’s performance see’s the band showcase a selection of tunes from their debut self titled album, kicking off the night will a leisurely version of keyboard heavy track ‘Cult Logic’.

With little time taken for crowd interaction this Swedish trio waste no time ploughing through the fan favourite tracks of the album, with energetic performances of ‘Burial’ and ‘Black and Blue’ encapsulating this packed London venue.

Singer, Pontus Winnberg, shows us why there’s more to Sweden than ABBA with charismatic performances of ‘A Horse is Not a Home’ and personal favourite ‘Silvia’, both of which display their signature style of mixing traditional indie with modern house beats.

While watching this well orchestrated set full of synthesizers, drum machines, keyboards and even some dry ice, I find it hard to pin down this band to any one genre. But whatever you decide to label their mix of dirty electro, house tunes and indie rock, it’s nothing short of delightful.

Although I’m sure the crowd have been enjoying the gig so far, it seems they finally wake up for the last few songs with ‘Plastic Jungle’ and ‘Animal’ prompting the biggest reaction. The band then bow out, leaving the stage one by one, with an extended electronic medley topping off what seems to have been a very successful gig.

With only one album under their belt this talented Swedish band is striving past all expectations, and with this confident performance, an extensive UK and US tour already booked, and hopefully some 2010 festival appearances, I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear from Miike Snow!

8/10
