HEAVEN CAN WAIT // CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG FT BECK // BECAUSE MUSIC // 11.01.10

Heaven Can Wait is the duet between Charlotte Gainsbourg and her new collaborator Beck, and is taken from Gainsbourg’s new album IRM. It is a rather sunny, surreal affair that is distinctly Beck, but at the same time reminiscent of the Kinks’ ‘Sunny Afternoon’. Catchy and bright, even though the lyrics make no sense, there is something about it that cheers you up and you don’t quickly tire of it.

Gainsbourg is never going to set the world alight with her vocal ability (especially when singing in English), but her style of singing suits the lightweight feel of Heaven Can Wait and indeed the rest of the songs on IRM. There is nothing groundbreaking about Heaven Can Wait, but you get the feeling they never set out for it to be. It’s a jolly little song, which is accompanied by an equally silly and surreal video and I get the feeling Gainsbourg’s oeuvre is always going to appeal to more leftfield audiences than the mainstream, who probably know her more as a film actress.

7/10
