MySpace: Exlovers

The first thing that you notice about this dreamy indie pop-fivesome , when listening to ‘Photobooth’, is how well the dual vocals work. The soft female voice of Laurel Sills pirouettes around the sleepy vocals of lead singer Pete Scott and harmonise perfectly together. Similar to The Lemonheads, set against a classic indie drum rhythm and accompanied by jangly guitar chords, wishful lines such as ‘if I could run, we should dive into the sun, no we don’t need anyone’ leave you slipping into a nostalgic state for the 2 minutes and 40 seconds the track runs for. Any longer though and the track would become background music as I feel it still lacks something that grabs the listener and makes it more memorable.

B – side ‘Weightless’ offers another side to the band in a song that personally I feel is better than ‘Photobooth’. ‘Weightless’ shows a darker more brooding side to the band, with less cheerless lyrics such as ‘I wasted all your time and now I’m weightless, I said I’ll let you down again and again and again’ and a slightly heavier and more sinister feel towards the end of the record, maintained by Scott’s, this time, sullen vocals.

Off the back of supporting other acts such as Pete Doherty and The Golden Silvers, Exlovers are currently on a UK tour and I would highly recommend checking out their MySpace before inevitably going to see this up and coming band.

7/10
