Delayed by over an hour because the bogs upstairs leaked onto an amp (The Retro Bar truly is a beautiful venue), Exlovers put on a short but excellent show to a humble but impressed crowd. Playing just seven songs and re-jigging the set list, Exlovers opened with latest single Photobooth and also played a couple of new songs back-to-back; the acoustic In The Woods with the werewolves and Hangman respectively. In between came the catchy You Forget So Easily, before which singer Laurel was quick to point out the only reason she was stood so close to her co-vocalist (and Exlover??) Pete was the aforementioned toilet-based leak. The on-stage chemistry, or lack of it, between the two singers, singing away from each other the whole gig, only gives more meaning to the songs as they are whispered out with dreamy melancholy.

You’re So Quiet sees the band really enjoy their own music as Laurel sways from side-to-side nervously clutching her skirts and Pete and Danny furiously strumming their guitars as if this were the most important gig ever. Just A Silhouette follows before the set is closed with a somewhat heavier version of Weightless, which worked in some ways and in others just completely ruined one of their best songs.

As co-headliners on this tour, having already supported Pete Doherty, Exlovers deserve all the plaudits they get. The only shame about this gig was the lack of people at it, missing out on such an absorbing band.

GO AND SEE THIS BAND!
