Following on from the majestic ‘Crying Lightning’, the Arctics release (my personal favourite) the eerie love-ballad ‘Cornerstone’, on which Turner croons and narrates us through a tale of a lost love and mistaken identity. With a Coral-like feel to the song, we are taken on a foggy trip to several of the storyteller’s preferred watering holes such as ‘The Parrot’s Beak’ or the ‘Battleship’ where he mistakes several young ladies for his ex-lover, before arriving finally at ‘The Cornerstone’ where….he gets off with his ex bird’s sister….I think…

Set against a soft organ and guitar background with sleepy drums, ‘Cornerstone’ really does stand out from most of the Arctic Monkey’s earlier releases, and rubber stamps the band’s lyrical and musical maturity and coming of age with their latest album Humbug.

Even music lovers who are not fans of the Sheffield band’s previous work will find themselves stopping to listen to Turner’s mysterious lyrics and attempting to unravel the true meaning of his songs. This is real thought provoking music that conjures up different images for anyone who listens to it. This is what real music should do and I can’t wait to see where the band will go next. The video is stupid tho!

9/10
