Daft Punk this week released their latest album ‘Random Access Memories’, and like that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, they have also revealed an extra song exclusively available to Japanese fans. The additional track ‘Horizon’ appeared as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of 'Random Access Memories’. This is common marketing tool within the music industry in Japan and plenty of artists have released an extra album track exclusively for the Japanese market.

‘Horizon’ is no where near as catchy as some of the other songs on the album such as ‘Get Lucky’ or 'Doin’ It Right'. But is still a great addition to the album, it’s a little more relaxed in tempo and sort of has a Pink Floyd-esque vibe. Well worth a listen, check it out here.

On a sadder note Romanthony who collaborated on Daft Punk’s 2001 hit single One More Time, sadly died this week. Tributes from across the music industry have been made online including a tweet from DJ Pete Tong: "Sad news RIP Romanthony."

The ever energetic rap trio that is The Lonely Island have treated us to a new video for the track Diaper Money which will be found on their anticipated upcoming new album The Wack Album, set for release next month.

Teaming up with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine and Lady Gaga for previous projects means that big things are expected to come from this new album release. On the 10th of June, songs featuring Billie Joe Armstrong, Pharrell Williams and T-Pain will join other special guest tracks in a bid to achieve success following in the footsteps of their 2011 album Turtleneck And Chain, which reached #3 in the Billboard charts and #23 in the UK album charts.

Can't wait til then for all the excitement? Keep your eye on The Lonely Island's Youtube Channel where every Wednesday (#wackwednesdays) up until the release, the band will debut new content from new music video's to exclusive announcements!

Monday saw the release of IS TROPICAL's new album I'm Leaving via the French record label Kitsuné. Produced by Luke Smith (Depech Mode, Foals) and containing stunning female vocals from Crystal Fighters' Ellie Fletcher, the album is not one to take lightly.

Along with the album, the band have made available a free remix download of the track Dancing Anymore to accompany the video that was released last week.

For those of you reading this and thinking, “Are those guys still around?” bear with me a second. The reason I went to this concert was to look at an increasing phenomenon in the live music scene; the revisited album concert. Some bands are increasingly specialising in tours which whole concerts are devoted to one particular album. For example, it is the tenth anniversary of when Athlete first broke into the mainstream with their album Vehicles & Animals. From this album came classic Britpop songs such as ‘El Salvador’ and ‘You Got The Style’, but does this form of concert appeal to bands who have run out of new ideas and are simply diving into their back catalogue?

The perception from the sold-out audience that night says otherwise. Athlete’s big appeal has always been their mellow, yet soulful sound. The band took the audience from the upbeat tunes of ‘You’ve Got The Style’ and ‘Vehicles & Animals’ to the atmospheric heights of ‘Dungeness’. They also lead a stunning encore which featured ‘Half Light’ and ‘Wires’, their most recognisable song. Even with these additions at the end, I still suspect that the audience were happy to listen to just the Vehicles & Animals songs. Let’s be honest, why go and see your favourite band in order to play new stuff you are not interested in when you can hear them play their most famous album for most of the gig. Come to think about it, wouldn’t it be better if you went to a Strokes gig, which is entirely devoted to ‘Is This It’, or a Foo Fighter gig in which the main set list is ‘The Colour And The Shape’, now those are gigs I would pay to see.

7/10

Coastal Cities are a band I've known about for a while having seen them live a year ago, and what really impressed me the most about them was their shimmery guitar tones.

This new single 'Entropic' shows a maturing band about to reach their peak. Following on from the successes of similar bands such as Theme Park amongst various others, the music has a nostalgic summery feel which with the soon (it should really be here now) approaching summer and festival season, should have listeners getting excited for some sunshine and cider in the park.

It is a genuinely danceable song with drums and a bass line that provide a real groove. The guitar lines are brilliantly clever with the melodies that while simple, appear to be unique and different on every listen. It is a brand of indie that I like, one you can dance to, drink to, be inspired by and one that you can listen to again and again.

Essex Indie-pop group Hero & Leander have released the video for their new single 'Kiss Me By The Water Cooler'. The single can be found on their debut album Tumble which was released on the 13th of May Via Tapete Records.

The band started online in 2010 and after posting several adverts appealing for a pianist and a female vocalist, the band became the line up they are known as today. With influences such as The Beatles, Hero & Leander have been compared to the likes of Squeeze, Camera Obscura and Arcade Fire, so if you're a fan of any of these bands, these guys are well worth a listen!

Field Report is the creation of Chris Porterfield, who cut his musical teeth with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and the members of Megafaun in the now-legendary band DeYarmond Edison.

After their breakup in 2006, Bon Iver and Megafaun went on to success while Chris hung back in Wisconsin and started a new chapter in his relationship with music. For the first time he began writing his own songs, which he spent the following five years carefully honing. In December 2011, the record was created at Vernon's studio in Fall Creek, WI. The result is a haunting, lyrical narrative due out at the end of the month.

Now as Field Report Chris has created deep and thoughtful well crafted folk with a delicately experimental edge. Watch 'Evergreen' below:

Omaha trio Icky Blossoms have released a free download ahead of their self-titled debut album out on 3rd of June. 'Deep in the Throes' is packed full of energetic, hedonistic, sexed up electronica and a small taster of what it to come.

Icky Blossoms formed in 2011 through friendship, trials and a mutual desire to make art and new music; a brainchild born from the boredom of sitting still. They combine bass-heavy electronic grooves, pop structure, and a rock & roll swagger to pioneer a sound that is simultaneously avant garde, catchy and danceable.

Each band member arrives at the group from distinct musical backgrounds and collectively cite varied influences including contemporary pop, electronic, hip hop, experimental, no wave and world music.

With a strong emphasis on DIY, the trio plans to integrate all their artistic abilities into the band, able then to better connect with those who choose to follow their creations or attend their live shows.

You can also watch their video to 'Heat Lightning'; another insight from what is to come in June:

A little over a year ago, five young lads from Nottingham graced the north-east of England with their lovely musical offerings and great showmanship. For whatever reason though, their reception wasn’t exactly stellar - only a handful of people showed up to Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s Riverside venue to catch Dog Is Dead, despite the band’s respectable success at the time. It was not-so-famously written, however, that the guys were going to be “huge”. Fast forward to May 3rd, 2013, and zoom down to Nottingham - the lads’ hometown, no less. Quite a different story…

Rock City retains a certain degree of infamy in the midlands with its ever-full roster of artists lining up to play; today's likes of Alt-J and Bastille comparing to the Nirvanas and Rage Against The Machines of yesteryear. The only option for a homecoming, tour-ending show, then. Prior to the main act, the crowd were greeted by half-hour sets from each support band - Kappa Gamma and To Kill A King. Despite the former act looking as if they should have been in amongst the predominantly-teenage crowd (apart from a “guest” appearance by none other than Jon Bentley [that bloke from The Gadget Show] - proof below) as opposed to being on-stage, they did not disappoint, showcasing daring song structures with sudden, unexpected variations throughout their material. Kappa Gamma have a genuinely different sound, and certainly warrant some research if your tastes aren’t just limited to indie pop. Best of all, they had a good amount of fans in the house, all of which rejoiced with their signature song Just Another closing their set.

Our night was made even better by this! @jonbentley90

twitter.com/Dog_Is_Dead/st…

— Dog Is Dead (@Dog_Is_Dead) May 4, 2013

The follow-ups To Kill A King played it safer musically, apparently appealing to more of the audience as a result with their plentiful easy-to-sing-along sections and oohs and ahhs. Admittedly this increase in audience engagement was something of a surprise, especially with their opening track being fairly reserved. Coupled with a frankly lacklustre vocal performance and some uninspiring lyrics, To Kill A King didn’t disappoint so much as underwhelm in terms of the energy levels present in the music itself. They did get the crowd going, however, and ended fairly epically with the members exploring the venue a little during the final song.

And then it was time. Any chance of disappointment was immediately null and void. The crowd begged for Dog Is Dead to appear, and when a brand new song fell on fresh ears to mark the opening of their show, it was easy to sense the awe in the room. A bold move, no doubt, but a wise choice with a positive outcome. The boys demonstrated immense vitality throughout their set which naturally eminated into and through the crowd. There was endless movement from everyone on the floor; it’s difficult not to get involved with such gorgeous music. Another new song halfway into the show split up the band’s offerings from debut album All Our Favourite Stories, which in itself only runs for around an hour - the only disappointment of the show as a result was its relatively short duration, but as they say, quality over quantity…

The band’s involvement with the crowd (and vice versa) could only be described as “full” - so much so that during Joss’ inevitable crowdsurf, a quick T-shirt change was necessary when he fell back onto the stage. An undergarment switch was likely necessary post-gig too, if a certain Facebook/Twitter photo is anything to go by…

Wow @rock_city_notts - we're all speechless! By the way who did this to Joss?

twitter.com/Dog_Is_Dead/st…

— Dog Is Dead (@Dog_Is_Dead) May 3, 2013

The work of Dog Is Dead is joyous, jovial and jubilant - but not mindlessly cheerful or with a sense of over-excitement. It all comes from the heart; the boys clearly put a lot of time and effort into crafting their music, and it’s finally paying dividends for them. Gone are the days of average gigs; they’re now confirmed for the next Glastonbury Festival. Rob thanked his hometown for their invaluable support and urged them to attend another show in the area in June - apparently this tour isn’t quite finished yet!

So, drawing comparisons from this immense show to the same situation last year…predictions? For Dog Is Dead, only good things.
