The New Mendicants will be releasing their anticipated debut album ‘Into The Lime’ on 20 January via the One Little Indian imprint.
Following the release of the taster ‘Australia’ EP in the summer of 2013, the trio of Joe Pernice, Norman Blake and Mike Belitsky deliver their debut longplayer as The New Mendicants later this month.
Moving to Toronto, Canada last year, Norman Blake was re-introduced to local Joe Pernice care of Pernice Brothers drummer Patrick Berkley – both having worked with Norwegian band, I Was A King in 2012.
A rendezvous swiftly arranged, ‘Within minutes of hanging out in my kitchen we were booking recording dates’ says Joe, the pair making their live debut with low-key public performances in a Toronto tavern – shows marked by plenty of banter, open-tunings and sublime pop smarts. Joined by Mike Belisky of The Sadies on drums, the band have come to form as The New Mendicants.
‘Into The Lime’ features nine original tracks full of effervescent Hollies/Byrdsian guitar pop and also a rendition of Sandy Denny’s ‘By The Time It Gets Dark’. The album was recorded sporadically, between the summer of 2012 and spring 2013 in Ontario, Canada.
