The Red Dragon Records ‘Renaissance’ series has a sharp focus on bringing the freshest, unheard talent to the fore with artists getting a fair return on their tracks as well as free exposure.

The second compilation album in this eclectic series sees a strong focus on DIY indie, underpinning the Red Dragon message and harnessing the power of the internet. Opening with the inimitable guitar throes of Training Icarus, the album flirts through genres, spanning from fiddling folk to eclectic instrumentals and slacker rock without so much as shifting a whisker. A whopping 90 mins (in the real world, a double-CD compilation) makes a welcome change in a world of half-assed EPs and endless singles.

Renaissance

Opening with the riffy punches of Training Icarus’ ‘Taking What’s Mine’, followed by the tight thrashes of Black Nevada, 2nd Renaissance celebrates the profound variety seen in today’s indie spotlight.
The Crocked Monsieurs’ ‘Home Sweet Home’ sees 80s keyboard uniquely fused amid Americana before later on, the album takes a melancholy turn with Tom Mitchell’s ‘Only Partly There’, to a place where gentle understated vocals layer over Spanish-influenced guitar.

Paradigms’ ‘Ultraviolet’ is another mellow affair, that builds as it continues. Album closer, ‘Armour’ from The Moth Lantern, is the perfect end to this eclectic time capsule of an album.Fresh in 2013 but definitely one you’ll come back to again and again.
