Operatic indie-dance group Austra are back with new single ‘Painful Like’, taken from recent album ‘Olympia. The single will be released on 2 September on Domino.
Influenced by early Chicago house music when dance music was performed with a live band, ‘Painful Like’ was performed live in the studio free of any programming or loops. While the lyrics may deal with the disillusionment of growing up gay in a small town and finding solace in the arms of a lover, it’s bubbly and buoyant, and reflects that ‘Olympia’ is fundamentally a dance record.
Frontwoman Katie Stelmanis says of the video: ‘‘The main influence was 90’s sci-fi movies like The Ninja Turtles, Super Mario Bros and Garbage Pail Kids where all the visual effects are done by hand and look really gross. We asked Exploding Motor Car to make the video cos they specialise in hand-made effects and puppet-making. ‘Painful Like’ is a song about living life in the sidelines.’”
