U.S boy/girl duo MS MR (funny that) have all the correct credentials needed to appeal to UK listeners.
They’ve got confident vocals that gravitate themselves towards the likes of Marina and the Diamonds with mystical lyrics like “Maybe I’ll find something real, not a fantasy”.
This is twinned with the production fitting the voice at its different stages, as it builds up to the chorus. Passionate drums ignite, with what sounds like a dabble with a xylophone, giving it a ‘big’ anthem-style Florence and the Machine feel. Though this pairing and the ‘you can tell it’s MS MR’ vocal is enough to give them their own statement.
There seems to have been a revival in duos consisting of opposite genders recently, pushing boundaries in the alternative field. Alpines, AlunaGeorge and Sleigh Bells have all brought different sounds forward to prove themselves and shake off any form of label associating them with being a generic indie boy/girl duo.
Due to set out on tour with Bastille later this month, MS MR, a.k.a London-born Lizzy Plapinger and Idaho’s Max Hershenow, are sure to gain a new posse of admirers on this side of the pond.
