Black Daniel // Acid To The Grime // Out Now // Trashmouth Records
On their SoundCloud page, 'Black Daniel' have been described as ‘Alt-Disco Punk’. I would like to start by suggesting that this latest single ‘Acid To The Grime’ is not at all what I would call punk. Alternative disco, on the other hand, is definitely suitable.
The track begins well, building a groovy and heavy beat, before proceeding into a 'Gorillaz' like chorus with lyrics and vocal styles that are both catchy and amiable. The chorus is probably the best part of the track.
Other than the above, I’m not too sure about this one. The rapping that dominates the majority of the track is OK; it neither attracts nor deters me. The mish-mash of synths and samples towards the end of the song is slightly confusing, and whilst I know there is meant to be an element of humour with this group, I just don’t find it that funny.
